The Faculty of Arts of the University of South Bohemia is proud to be hosting the 5th ESSPT, which will be devoted to a wide range of aesthetic themes and problems considered from the point of view of Process thought.

A lively and enlightening conference and Summer School on process philosophy came to a close in early August, 2018. Despite the fact that the Summer School was sponsored by the Faculty of Art, South Bohemian University and co-organised by the European Society for Process Thought, the conference was far from being exclusively a Eurocentric exercise.
It was richly multicultural, with presenters from varied backgrounds. It included Whitehead scholars and research students from the UK, Germany, the US, India, Poland and Ukraine, African-American scholars and more. Another significant feature of this Summer School was that although the process philosophy of A.N. Whitehead and his successors was an important focus, many of the presenters delved into related areas of processual interests including Buddhist studies, the philosophy of Henri Bergson, and John Dewey.
Thus, the Summer School was not exclusively Whitehead-centric, though Alfred North Whitehead’s process philosophy was the pivot. The process aesthetics proved to be an excellent starting point for examining different philosophical themes. The following is a thematic arrangement, linking each presentation to process aesthetics. It is significant that, when it comes to process philosophy and process aesthetics, there are no water-tight divisions. Many of the papers, therefore, belong to different thematic groups. Thomas Howe); Process Aesthetics and Non-Human Communication (Alexandra Kimbo); Process Aesthetics and Other Traditions (Raj Ayyar, Dagmar Dotting, Christian Thomas Kohl); Process Aesthetics and Religion (Piotr Lesniak, Raj Ayyar); Process Aesthetics and Music (Helmut Maassen, Lennart Posch, Roland Ring); Process Aesthetics and Racial Discrimination (Michael L. Thomas); Process Aesthetics and Phenomenology (Michel Weber); Process Aesthetics and Personhood (Sinan von Stietencron); Process Aesthetics and ‘Crealectics’(Luis de Miranda); Process Aesthetics and Bergson on Humor (Milos Ševčík).
This clearly illustrates the thematic richness of the papers; in addition, there was the atmosphere of personal and intellectual enrichment that accompanied all papers and events of the conference.

Faces of the Community: Agency and Meaning in Urban Visual Communication, Central Europe 1400-1700
Symbolic communication through seeing played an important role in the pre-Modern and Early Modern urban communities. Families, groups, corporations and individuals were visualised through images, objects and symbols in the urban space, making medieval and early modern town culture one of presence and visibility. Symbolic communication through donations and commissions was an inseparable part of representing communities and urban social networks, both to their members, as well as outsiders. Next to their primary functions, town halls, squares, facades, gates, churches and cemeteries became a stage for communicating one's status, religious attitudes and political affiliations. Architectural decoration, altarpieces, epitaphs, and liturgical objects act as an imaginative visual archive of the town's constructed past and set them within a present network of urban communication.
The GAČR-funded project Faces of the Community of the Institute of Aesthetics and Art History of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice organises a two-day conference to map aspects of the visual and performative communication in the urban space of the late medieval and early modern towns in East-Central Europe. Papers are invited to look at the different agents that through images, monuments, and rituals gave meaning to and shaped urban space. They may also explore various functions of such symbolic communication and its wider religious, cultural, social and political contexts, as well as the motivations of the individual commissioners. Particularly welcome are papers dealing with monuments and performances reflecting urban religious landscape and interaction in the multidenominational towns, individual and collective spiritual investments, and architectural interventions in the urban space in cross-regional and comparative perspective.
The conference will take place in November 12-13th, 2015 in the Rectorate and Faculty of Philosophy Building of the University of South Bohemia, České Budějovice. A guided excursions to the towns of Český Krumlov and České Budějovice are planned as part of the conference programme. Upon request, the accommodation will be provided for free in the university accommodation. There is a limited possibility of travel cost reimbursement.

ESTETIKA, ETIKA A ZOOLOGICKÉ ZAHRADY
5. listopadu 2011 se v Akademickém konferenčním centru AV ČR v Husově ulici v Praze konal V. ročník konference Krása, krajina, příroda, tentokrát pod názvem Krása a zvíře. Estetika, etika a zoologické zahrady. V rámci programu konference bylo předneseno 13 příspěvků z oblasti estetiky, filozofie, literární vědy a sociálních a přírodních věd. Ústav estetiky FF JU by chtěl touto cestou znovu po roce poděkovat všem zúčastněným, tzn. spolupořádajícím institucím, přednášejícím, kolegům a studentům za účast, poznámky, komentáře a dotazy. Těšíme se na další setkání.

PŘIROZENOST A UMĚLOST
9. listopadu 2010 se v Akademickém konferenčním centru AV ČR v Husově ulici v Praze konal IV. ročník konference Krása, krajina, příroda, tentokrát pod názvem Zahrada. Přirozenost a umělost. Během celého dne zaznělo 14 příspěvků z oblasti zahradnictví, estetiky, filozofie, literární vědy, dějin umění a přírodních věd. Ústav estetiky FF JU by chtěl touto cestou opět poděkovat všem zúčastněným, tzn. spolupořádajícím institucím, přednášejícím, kolegům a studentům.

3. listopadu 2009 se v zasedací místnosti Ústavu dějin umění AV ČR v Husově ulici v Praze konal III. ročník konference Krása, krajina, příroda, tentokrát pod názvem Kauza les. Environment jako estetický problém. Zaznělo zde 11 příspěvků z oblasti estetiky, filozofie, literární vědy a přírodních věd. Ústav estetiky FF JU by chtěl touto cestou všem zúčastněným – spolupořádajícím institucím, přednášejícím, kolegům a studentům – poděkovat.
