The Institute of Romance Studies at the Faculty of Arts USB was founded 1st September 2007 by a transformation from the Department of Romance Studies which existed since 1991 at the Faculty of Education at the University of South Bohemia.
The Institute of Romance Studies (IRS) provides Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in French, Italian, and Spanish Philology, as well as a Doctoral program in Romance Languages. Additionally, students can pursue consecutive Master's programs in Translation studies or Teacher Training for Upper Secondary Schools, specializing in the aforementioned languages. Apart from traditional philological disciplines like Linguistics and Literature, the IRS offers courses that delve into broader cultural contexts and applied disciplines related to European and international trade.
The IRS fosters extensive international collaboration, engaging with over 40 universities in Europe and South America. Numerous opportunities exist for obtaining double degrees with various universities in France, Spain, or Italy.
Research at the IRS spans key philological disciplines, emphasizing Linguistics and Literature. In Linguistics, the focus lies on the analysis of text structure and selected issues in word formation, including contrastive analyses of legal terminology, heavily relying on empirical corpus-based data. In Literature, the IRS concentrates its research on the history of Romance literature and its reception in the Czech lands, with a specific emphasis on historical book collections and the reception of translations.
